IATA organises a workshop of food sustainability within the framework of the Severo Ochoa

The Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA), of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is organising a workshop with speakers of international impact, focused on improving sustainability in the food sector.. 

This conference is part of the Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan of Excellence. Research in Sustainable Food, from Production to Preservation, is one of the research pillars of the project.

We will have the participation of 6 national and international speakers who will explain their research lines and offer approaches from different perspectives to the relationship between sustainability and the production and consumption of food.  

Amparo López, Amparo Querol and Fidel Toldrá, director of the Institute, director of the Severo Ochoa and Research Professor at IATA, respectively, will open the workshop.

Anne-Marie Hermansson, from Chalmers University of Technology, will give a general overview, entitled: "Global missions and the critical needs of food science, nutrition and technology". Next, Charis Galanakis, Professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences at Taif University (Saudi Arabia), will talk about the food of the future, with a presentation entitled: "Advancements and Strategies for Future Food".

After the coffe breakMarta Guadalupe Rivera, researcher at Instituto de Gestión de la Innovación y el Conocimiento (INGENIO, CSIC-UPV), will talk about the challenges and opportunities involved in a global change in the agri-food system, in a talk entitled: "Just transitions of agri-food systems: challenges and opportunities".

Next, Richard Fitzgerald, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Limerick (Ireland), will talk about sustainable protein sources: "Sustainable protein resources for the generation of biologically active peptides"; and Francisco Vilaplana, researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and director of KTH Food, will give a seminar entitled: "Strategies for upcycling of agricultural side streams".

David Berryman, researcher at the International Fruit and Vegetable Juice Association, will offer the last of the conferences, with a talk entitled: "Is plastic packaging sustainable?", where he will address the problem of the use of plastic packaging. The workshop will conclude with a round table in which all the speakers will take part.
